Horizon Zero Dawn is releasing on the 28th of February here in United States, and as of writing this the review embargo has just been lifted and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The game currently sits at an 88 on Metacritic and that puts it in 3rd place for the most critically-acclaimed Playstation exclusive title behind Uncharted 4 and Bloodbourne.
So will Horizon Zero Dawn be Sony’s next big franchise? Yes. You can’t dispute that. Horizon is getting fantastic critical reception, and will surely sell extraordinarily well. To compare Horizon with Uncharted, Sony’s most prominent IP of the last generation, the first Uncharted game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune also has a 88 on Metacritic. However, the first Uncharted installment sold around 3 million units, which will be a measly amount compared to what Horizon is sure to sell. Obviously, this isn’t a completely fair comparison as Horizon is being released on a console that has been out in the market for a few years now with great success, while Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was released in 2007 on a struggling PS3 that had only been out for around a year at that point.
I purchased Horizon Zero Dawn on it’s release day a few days ago and have played just a few hours of it. I have not gotten very far at all, but I am intrigued by what I have seen so far. It is a truly massive game and I have not even scratched the surface on all that there is to do in the game.
